Yuri Petrovich Dyakov was born on December 31, 1929 in the small town of Kotovsk near Tambov in the Voronezh region of Russia. At a young age he was impressed with the beauty of nature around him, and this early inspiration determined his career as a landscape artist. In 1945 and 1946, Yuri attended an art club headed by Konstantine Petrov, from whom he acquired a basic knowledge of drawing and composition. On Petrov’s recommendation, Yuri studied from 1947 to 1949 in Tambov under Nikolai Otnyakin, who taught him the finer points of art. In 1949 he entered the Art-Pedagogical College named for Savintsky in Penza (also called Penza Art College). He graduated in 1954 and then taught drawing at a school in the village of Khrenovoye in the Voronezh region. In 1958 he moved to Voronezh and began teaching drawing and painting at the Suvorov Military College. At the same time he took part in large and small exhibitions throughout the Soviet Union. He became a candidate for the Artists’ Union of the USSR and was granted admission in 1967. In 1990 a large exhibition of his work was held in the Exhibition Hall of the Artists’ Union. In 1995 he received a Diploma from the Artists’ Union in recognition of his successful career as an artist. Dyakov lives and works in the Voronezh region.
