Gavril Khoaritonovich Vaschenko was born in Chikalovichi, Gomel region, Belorussia, in 1928. He studied at the Kiev College of Applied Art from 1945 to 1948 and at the Lvov State Institute of Applied and Decorative Art in the early 1950s. He lived and worked in Kishinev, Moldavia, until 1961, and in Minsk, Belorussia, thereafter.

He began exhibiting his works in 1957. He taught at the Kishinev Art College from 1955 to 1960, and began teaching at the Minsk Theater-Art Institute in the 1960s. He is also known as a monumentalist.
