Andrei Bogachev was born in Murmansk in 1951. He studied at art school (for high school) in Saratov from 1961 to 1965 and at the Saratov School of Art from 1968 to 1974. He worked at the Saratov Drama Theater from 1970 to 1974, and from 1974 to 1978 he taught painting, figurative drawing and composition at the Saratov Art School. From 1978 to 1984 he studied at the Leningrad Academy of Applied Arts of the USSR (the Repin Academy) in the studios of academician Boris Ugarov and V.I. Reihet, National Artist of the USSR.
